In Ohio waters good catches of walleye are coming from west of the
Islands, north of Lorain, and above Ashtabula and Conneaut. Yellow perch
are being taken west of the islands, around the Camp Perry firing range,
and off Lorain, Fairport, Cleveland, and Conneaut. Smallmouth fishing is
best around the Islands and Ruggles Reef with some also coming from
western basin reefs, Sandusky Bay, and rocky shoreline areas. The best
fishing for steelhead has been off Conneaut.
Lake Erie had strong northeast winds twice within the last two
weeks. Each time the lake was churned up and fishing was not good for a
few days after. A few limit catches of walleye have come off Monroe and
some perch habe been biting off stony point in Michigan waters.
August 29, 2004
Perch catches have been reported near Luna Pier, Bolles Harbor, and
Sterling State Park. Some walleye have also been taken near Sterling State
Park.
July 28, 2004
Some good steelhead action has been reported from Ontario waters off
Wheatley and also off Erieau. Walleye action is good around Pelee and
also around Middle Sister Island. Some walleye have been caught off
Bolles Harbor, Monroe, and Luna Pier. Bass fishing is reported to
be good along the shore and in harbors from Huron to Conneaut. Perch are
coming from several locations, especially around Rattlesnake Island,
northwest and southeast of Kelleys Island, off Lakeside and off
Marblehead.
July 25, 2004
In New York waters the walleye action has been slow. Bass have been
moderately active near reefs and shoals at depths up to 40 ft. Some lake
trout are coming from the waters off Dunkirk.
July 2. 2004
Walleye fishing is still tough (mayflies) but some (mainly trollers) are
doing well. Good catches have been reported from Michigan waters north
of Bolles Harbor to the area near the Fermi nuclear plant; near the
Toledo shipping channel; between Middle and West Sister Islands; north
of Lorain; north of Ashtabula; west of Geneva; near Dunkirk and
Barcelona; and in the Buffalo area. Good perch fishing success has been
reported from the Monroe Michigan area; off Middle Bass Island; near
Lakeside; east and northeast of Kelley's Island; off Lorain; north of
Cleveland; near Ashtabula and Conneaut; near Dunkirk; off Cattaragus
creek; and off Sturgeon Point. Smallmouth bass are reported from the
bass island area; Kelley's island; Sandusky bay; Ruggles reef; rocky
shoreline areas; off Barcelona; and in the waters off Buffalo. Some
steelhead are being caught in the eastern half of Lake Erie by trollers
(mainly those fishing for walleye).
June 24, 2004
The mayflies are thick on Lake Erie and the fish are gorging on them and
are harder to catch since they are not hungry. Walleye can be found
along the Michigan shore north of Monroe to the Fermi area, along the
Toledo shipping channel, and near the Ontario border south of Middle
Sister island. Perch are near the shipping channel, in the Marblehead
area, around Niagara reef, south and east of Kelleys island, and near
Lorain, Cleveland, Ashtabula, Conneaut, and Fairport. For
smallmouth bass try around the Islands, Sandusky bay, Ruggles reef, and
in the harbors and along the shoreline from Cleveland east. Some
steelhead have been taken by trollers looking for walleye from
Avon point and eastward. Remember that areas close to nuclear plants are
off limits to boaters.
June 8, 2004
In the western basin walleye are being taken near the shipping channel,
north and west of West Sister Island, northwest of Rattlesnake Island
and between the bass islands and Kelleys Island. Good catches of larger
fish are coming from Canadian waters near Pelee Island. Walleye are also
being taken in waters from Vermillion to Lorain, north of the Cleveland
area, and off Barcelona in New York waters.
Perch are coming from
waters near the Marblehead lighthouse, near Vermillion, off Lorain and
Cleveland, near Fairport and Conneaut, and near Cattaragus Creek in New
York.
Smallmouth are hitting in the shallows and rocky areas of New York
waters.
Watch for debris including logs and trees floating in the lake. Much
debris has been washed down by rivers running high from the heavy rains
of recent weeks.
May 16, 2004
In New York waters a few bass have been taken in the lake but better
catches have been from the warmer harbor waters. Look for perch from
Cattaraugus Creek to Sturgeon Point in water about 50 feet deep. Walleye
have been hitting east of Barcelona. In western Lake Erie walleye are
hitting near the Toledo shipping channel, north of Kelleys Island, west
of Catawba, southeast of Starve Island, and southwest of Rattlesnake
Island. Perch fishing is good near the Toledo shipping channel, near
Marblehead, southeast of Kelleys Island, near the Vermillion River, and
close to Lorain.
May 11, 2004
Perch have reportedly been caught near the Toledo harbor light, near
Marblehead, and close to Vermillion.
Walleye fishing across the western basin of Lake Erie has been
moderately good when weather permits with some reporting good
catches and others getting only a few fish. Several large fish have been
mixed in with the catches (32 inches and over).
May 1, 2004
Walleye are being taken near the Toledo Harbor lighthouse, around the
reef complex north of Camp Perry, around the Bass Islands, between South
Bass and Kellys Islands near the international boundary and west of
Pelee Island (wagon Wheel). Perch are biting near Monroe, Bolles Harbor,
the Toledo Harbor lighthouse, along the northeast side of the Marblehead
peninsula, and near Vermillion and Lorain.
April 16, 2004
Some walleye have been taken in the reef area of the western basin with
a few larger fish being caught in deeper waters. Some perch were biting
near the Marblehead lighthouse. Further east, brown trout, steelhead and
some coho are being taken by those fishing close to shore in shallow
waters. Look for yellow perch near Cattaraugus Creek and around Sturgeon
Point.
April 2, 2004
Walleye spawning runs are going strong and should last another week or
two, however walleye fishing is prohibited except in the Ohio waters of
Lake Erie where the current limit is three fish. Steelhead are in the
streams and can also be taken in the lake near the mouths of rivers and
streams. Some perch have been taken just south of the Detroit River near
Gibraltar and also near the Marblehead lighthouse.
