October 2, 2005 -- In Lake Erie's western basin perch fishermen have been doing well with many limit or near limit catches the last few weeks. The perch have been mostly of small to average size but usually with a few large fish mixed in. Larger perch are being taken from waters a few miles east of Kelleys Island shoal. A few walleye have been caught from rocky areas of shoals and reefs. Good catches of smallmouth bass are coming from the Canadian waters near Pelee Island and other island areas.

August 8, 2005 -- Walleye fishing is very slow. A few walleye are coming from the area south of "F can" on the Canadian line, between "A can" and "B can" on the firing range and from the Toledo water intake to the Toledo harbor light. Many fishermen are targeting perch while the walleye fishing is slow. A few good perch catches have come from the waters between Middle Bass Island and Middle Island. Some nice bass have come from the waters off Kelleys Island and off North Bass Island. In the central basin both steelhead and walleye are being caught in water depths over 60' by trollers fishing for either species. Perch are in waters approximately 45' deep and smallmouth are usually close to structure or rocky areas like artificial reefs and breakwalls.

July20, 2005 -- Lake Erie walleye fishing is not good right now. There are lots of small (under size limit)walleye to be had and some keepers are usually taken as well, but catch rates are very low in the western basin. Look for walleye along the Toledo shipping channel, near the Toledo water intake, around "A" and "B" cans on the firing range, and along the Canadian border near "F" and "G" cans. Generally the keepers are on the bottom and the smaller fish are up higher. Perch fishing is also in the doldrums but a few nice catches have come from the waters north of Kelleys Island.

July 17, 2005 -- Some perch are coming from the waters near the shipping channel of the Toledo Harbor Light. There are lots of small walleye between the Toledo water intake and the Toledo harbor light with few keepers included.

July 10, 2005 -- The mayflies have been hatching for nearly a month and the walleye catch rate has really dropped as a result. Hopefully the hatch will be over soon and fishing can return to normal. There are concentrations of walleye west of West Sister Island and along the Canadian border northwest of "F" can. There are lots of small fish in these areas but there are also some legal size fish mixed in. Be careful when releasing the small walleye. By next year they should be of legal size and fishing should be much better. Larger catches of nice size walleye have been coming from the Canadian waters around Pelee Island and East Sister Island, but even these areas have not been producing well for the last few days. Smallmouth season is now open and there is some good action around the Bass Islands and even better around Pelee Island. Perch fishing has not been very good lately but a few nice catches have come from the deeper waters north of Kelleys Island. Persons trolling for walleye have reported taking some large perch along the Canadian border northwest of North Bass Island while fishing for walleye.

June 8, 2005 -- Walleye fishing has been good west of the Bass Islands. Trolling has been producing near limit catches. Drifting is usually but not always less productive. Good numbers of fish are spread across the flats but for the most part they are not trophy size. There are also good catches of smaller fish being taken west of West Sister Island. For perch look between Rattlesnake and Middle Bass Islands, east of Kelleys Island, and in the waters off Marblehead. The fish being cleaned today had large numbers of mayfly in their stomachs indicating that a mayfly hatch has begun and probably fishing will be tough for the next few weeks.

May 14, 2005 -- Walleye have come from the area around West Sister Island, the reef complex, west of North Bass Island, and west of Middle Island. Several smallmouth have been hooked while walleye fishing on the reefs.

May 2, 2005 -- Weather has hampered fishing for several days and inaccurate forecasts by the weather bureau have caused many fishing trips to be cancelled unnecessarily. Fishing efforts have been concentrated in the same general areas as last week; in the reef complex off Camp Perry and northwest of Rattlesnake Island for walleye, and east of Kelleys Island and off the Marblehead lighthouse for perch. Those jigging for walleye on the reefs have reported catching several smallmouth. Large schools of fish have been reported in Ohio waters near the Canadian line west of Middle Island but no success in hooking them. If you fish the reef complex be sure to check with Camp Perry to verify their firing schedule. Much of the water area is included in the impact area from the firing range.

April 26, 2005 -- This is basically a generic report. There are a few charter boats in the water and they have made a few trips with varying results but the season is only beginning. This time of year in most of the Great Lakes steelhead and brown trout are in the waters near shore and can be taken by trolling close to shore. Smelt and suckers are making spawning runs and can be taken in and near the mouths of streams. Steelhead are also still in many streams. Walleye are just completing their spawning and the white bass are beginning. As the waters continue to warm the fish should begin feeding more actively. Be sure to check the fishing regulations for your area since seasons and creel limits can vary by area and time of year.

Some good catches of walleye have come from the reef area northwest of Port Clinton and from the flats west of the islands. Perch are being caught east of Kelly island and off the Marblehead lighthouse.

Reports will begin when boating season starts. (Usually in April)
